AMD’s FSR 4.1 is coming to Xbox. AMD and Microsoft said on October 20 that FSR Upscaling 4.1, AMD’s AI upscaler, is headed to the Xbox Series X and Series S, though only as “coming soon.” The ROG Xbox Ally X and X20 get it first, in a preview update ASUS plans for October 23\. Radeon RX 6000 graphics cards got it on October 20, and Microsoft’s next console, [Project Helix](https://averagetechnerds.com/xbox-project-helix/), gets something called FSR Diamond.

Bottom line up front

## So what does this mean for the *Average TechNerd*?

FSR 4.1 is reaching older hardware: Radeon RX 6000 cards got it on October 20, the ROG Xbox Ally X and X20 are next, and the Xbox Series X|S is listed as coming soon. Neither AMD nor Microsoft has given a console date or a list of games.

ASUS plans its preview driver for October 23\. Whether Xbox games pick it up on their own or need patches is still unknown, and ASUS hasn’t said when the base ROG Xbox Ally gets it.

## What is FSR 4.1?

It’s AMD’s upscaler that uses machine learning to rebuild a sharp image from a lower-resolution frame. The game renders fewer pixels, which runs faster, and a trained model fills in the detail. [AMD says](https://newsroom.amd.com/news/amd-fsr-upscaling-4-1-boosts-frames-image-quality/?ref=averagetechnerds.com) that’s a big jump in image quality over FSR 3.1, the older version that works without a trained model.

FSR 4 launched in 2025 as an exclusive for Radeon RX 9000 cards, AMD’s newest generation. RX 7000 cards got FSR 4.1 this summer. Anything older was stuck on FSR 3.1, and that’s the wall this announcement starts knocking down.

## When is FSR 4.1 coming to Xbox Series X and S?

Nobody has said, beyond “coming soon.” In [AMD’s announcement video](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fT6TIXnmv-s&ref=averagetechnerds.com), hosted by Jack Huynh, who runs AMD’s computing and graphics group, Xbox CTO Scott Van Vliet confirms FSR 4.1 for the Xbox Ally handhelds and says it’s coming soon to the Series X and Series S. Neither company has given a date or named a single game. As of October 20, Microsoft hadn’t posted about it on Xbox Wire, its official news site, either.

## Why is this a big deal for consoles from 2020?

Because the Series X and S run on graphics FSR 4 was never built for. Microsoft’s spec pages list a custom RDNA 2 GPU in both the [Series X](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/consoles/xbox-series-x?ref=averagetechnerds.com) and the [Series S](https://www.xbox.com/en-US/consoles/xbox-series-s?ref=averagetechnerds.com), the same graphics generation as Radeon RX 6000 cards, and the consoles [launched in November 2020](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2020/09/22/xbox-series-x-and-xbox-series-s-are-now-available-for-pre-order?ref=averagetechnerds.com). Until now, AMD’s AI upscaler skipped that generation entirely.

A better upscaler gives developers more room to work with. They can push a sharper picture at the same frame rate, or hold a steadier frame rate at the same picture. That’s a pretty good trick to teach hardware that’s almost six years old, especially the Series S, which Microsoft pitches at 1440p against the Series X’s 4K.

## Will games need an update?

Nobody has said, but the wording suggests developers will have to add it. In the video, Van Vliet calls FSR 4.1 another tool for developers to get great performance and visual quality. That’s how FSR has worked on Xbox so far: AMD’s [developer site](https://gpuopen.com/manuals/fsr%5Fsdk/getting-started/?ref=averagetechnerds.com) says registered Xbox developers get its FSR features through Microsoft’s Game Development Kit, and studios build them into their games. Whether older games can be switched over without a patch, the way the Ally’s driver can for games with FSR 3.1 or newer, hasn’t been announced.

## When does the ROG Xbox Ally get FSR 4.1?

The Ally X and the [ROG Xbox Ally X20](https://averagetechnerds.com/rog-xbox-ally-x20-price-release-date/) get it first, as a preview on October 23, and ASUS hasn’t said when the base model does. [ASUS says](https://rog.asus.com/us/articles/rog-ally/amd-fsr-upscaling-41-is-coming-to-the-rog-xbox-ally-x-and-x20-in-preview/?ref=averagetechnerds.com) the update is a new GPU driver in Armoury Crate SE, under Update Center, then Preview Updates. Previews can still have bugs. Once the driver leaves preview, it rolls out to Ally X and X20 owners automatically.

The handhelds run a new, smaller version of FSR 4.1, less than half the size of the version AMD made for RX 7000 cards. AMD built it for Z2 Extreme and Z2 A handhelds and Ryzen AI 9 laptops, and Huynh says it was validated across hundreds of laptop configurations and handhelds. AMD’s pitch is a sharper image even at 1080p on a handheld screen, with frame rates that can move above 60 fps.

## How do you turn it on?

In a game with FSR support, you turn it on in the game’s graphics settings once the new driver is installed. For older games that support FSR 3.1 or newer, ASUS adds an FSR tile to Command Center: press Y there to edit the layout, add the tile and toggle it on. ASUS says that brings FSR 4.1 to more than 400 games, and it points to [AMD’s supported games list](https://www.amd.com/en/products/graphics/technologies/fidelityfx/supported-games.html?ref=averagetechnerds.com). It also warns against stacking it with RSR, AMD’s system-wide upscaler, which is meant for games without FSR.

## Which other handhelds are on AMD’s list?

Any handheld with a Ryzen AI Z2 Extreme, Ryzen Z2 Extreme or Ryzen Z2 A chip. That covers the base ROG Xbox Ally and the Z2 Extreme versions of the Legion Go 2, but ASUS’s preview names only the Ally X and X20\. AMD adds that availability and timing vary by device, and it tells owners to check with their handheld’s maker. Lenovo hadn’t announced a Legion Go 2 update as of October 20.

Several handhelds miss out. The original ROG Ally’s Z1 Extreme, the Legion Go S’s Z2 Go and the [Steam Deck’s chip](https://averagetechnerds.com/fsr-4-steam-deck/) aren’t on the list, though Huynh says in the video that AMD is working on more chips, without naming any. The list leaves out my original ROG Ally and my Steam Deck LCD, while my Legion Go 2 makes it. Earlier this month, Huynh [told Korean media](https://www.thelec.net/news/articleView.html?idxno=14477&ref=averagetechnerds.com) that FSR 4 would reach handhelds by the end of the year.

## Which Radeon graphics cards get it?

The whole RX 6000 series, from the 6900 cards down to the 6400 class, in the [Adrenalin 26.10.1 driver](https://www.amd.com/en/resources/support-articles/release-notes/RN-RAD-WIN-26-10-1.html?ref=averagetechnerds.com) released October 20\. AMD says it optimized the lighter model it first made for RX 7000 cards so it runs on cards from 2020\. The same driver adds Ryzen AI Max 300 and 400 chips and Ryzen AI 9 300 and 400 laptop chips. The RX 6000 release is ahead of AMD’s own schedule, too: in May, AMD told RDNA 2 owners to expect something in early 2027.

## What is FSR Diamond?

It’s AMD’s next FSR, built for Microsoft’s next Xbox, [Project Helix](https://news.xbox.com/en-us/2026/03/11/project-helix-building-next-generation-of-xbox/?ref=averagetechnerds.com). When AMD [unveiled it in March](https://x.com/jackhuynh/status/2031794158055408062?ref=averagetechnerds.com), Huynh said it’s natively optimized for Project Helix and deeply integrated into Microsoft’s development kit. He listed four parts: next-gen ML upscaling, new ML multi-frame generation, next-gen Ray Regeneration for ray and path tracing, and next-gen neural rendering. Multi-frame generation adds several AI-made frames between each pair of real ones. On October 20, Van Vliet only said Helix will use FSR Diamond to power what comes next.

## How does it compare with PlayStation’s PSSR?

They come from the same work, so think cousins rather than rivals. In the video, Huynh says AMD’s [Project Amethyst partnership with Sony](https://averagetechnerds.com/ps6-handheld-rdna-5-rumor/) sits at the heart of FSR 4.1 on Radeon, PSSR 2 on the PS5 Pro and QSSR on the base PS5\. How they stack up on screen will have to wait until Xbox games ship with it.

## Who is it for?

Right now, it’s for RX 6000 owners on PC, and from October 23, for Ally X and X20 owners happy to run a preview driver. Xbox Series X|S players get a promise of sharper upscaling, with the timing and the games still up to Microsoft and developers. If you’re on an older handheld like the original ROG Ally or the Steam Deck, this round passes you by.

Which Xbox game would you want FSR 4.1 in first?

Based on AMD’s October 20, 2026 newsroom post, announcement video, driver release notes and developer documentation, Jack Huynh’s posts on X, ASUS’s ROG article on the Ally preview, Microsoft’s Xbox spec pages and Xbox Wire posts, as of October 20, 2026\. Release timing may change.
