Average TechNerds is a small personal site that accompanies the Average T3chN3rds YouTube channel. It's run by one person, Victor. This page explains what information the site collects, what it's used for, and the choices you have. If you have a question, email hello@averagetechnerds.com.

The short version

  • If you sign up, the site stores your email address so it can send you the newsletter.
  • The site counts visits to see which articles people read.
  • There are no ads, and your information is never sold.
  • You can unsubscribe or ask for your data to be deleted at any time.

What the site collects

When you sign up

Signing up is free and optional. When you sign up, the site stores your email address, and your name if you give one. It also records which page you signed up from, so I can see which articles bring people in. Your email address is used to send you the newsletter and to let you sign in to comment. It isn't shared with anyone else.

Newsletter emails

Newsletter emails record whether they were opened and which links were clicked. This shows me which topics people find useful. You can unsubscribe with the link at the bottom of every email.

Comments

To comment, you need to be signed up and signed in. Your comment and the name you choose are shown publicly next to it.

Visits to the site

The site uses the analytics built into Ghost, the platform it runs on, to count page views. It records things like which page was viewed, the site you came from, and your general location and device type. I only look at this as totals. It isn't used to build a profile of you, and it isn't used for advertising. When you're signed in, the site uses a cookie to keep you signed in.

Embedded YouTube videos

Some articles include videos from YouTube. When you play one, YouTube may collect information under Google's own privacy policy.

Following from the social web

Published articles can be followed from other social web services, such as Mastodon. If you follow or reply from one of those services, your public profile and public replies are visible as they are on that service.

Who else handles your information

The site is hosted by Ghost (Ghost Foundation), which also sends the newsletter emails. They process your information only to provide that service. Read Ghost's privacy policy. There are no ad networks and no data brokers, and your information is never sold or rented.

Your choices

  • Unsubscribe from the newsletter with the link in any email.
  • Change or delete your account from the Account link on the site when you're signed in.
  • Ask for a copy of your data, a correction or a deletion by emailing hello@averagetechnerds.com.

Your sign-up information is kept until you delete your account or ask me to remove it.

The Average TechNerds Studio tool

Average TechNerds Studio is a private tool that I use to manage my own YouTube channel. It uses the YouTube API Services to read my channel's analytics and, when I approve each change, to update the titles, descriptions and thumbnails of my own videos. It only works with my channel. It doesn't collect anything about visitors to this site or about anyone else's YouTube account. Its sign-in is stored only on my own computer, and nothing it reads is shared or sold.

By using this tool you agree to be bound by the YouTube Terms of Service, and Google's handling of data is covered by the Google Privacy Policy. Access can be revoked at any time from Google's security settings.
